Tanzania gets new beauty queeen

Dar es Salaam. Miss Ilala zone, Salha Israel (18) has won this year Miss Tanzania beauty pageant held at the Mlimani City hall.Salha beat other 29 contestants to take new model car, Jeep Patriot worth Tsh. 72 million and Shs 8 million in the historical pageant since the start of the beauty competition in 1994.
In 2003, Sylvia Bahame of Temeke zone won Nisan Hardbody worth Sh55 million and Sh7 million cash. Salha becomes the first winner to pocket such a huge amount of money.

It was not easy for salha who is also Miss Ilala to win the crown and a ticket to represent the country in the 61st Miss World beauty contest scheduled for November 6 at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London. Her win didn’t come at easy, she faced a number of other beauties but her accuracy in answering a number of questions from the judges including how to fight corruption in the country proved a turning point to her winning the crown.

Other contestants who managed to reach top five included Loveness Flavian who got Sh3million, and Jeniffer Kakolaki who pocketed Sh2.4 million.

For their efforts, those who came number six to 16th were awarded Sh1.2 million each while the 17th to 30th took home a consolation prize of Sh700, 000 each. The cash prizes bring the grand total of the money to be spent on prizes alone to approximately Sh120 million.

Salha answered well the question with great confidence in English and made thousands of beauty pageant fans to cheer her. The move made fans to predict to her that she would be the top queen in the contest.

When Miss Tanzania committee chairman, Prashant Patel announcing the winners, the fans knew that Salha is the one who would go home with the brand new car.

“I am very happy to win the crown and get the chance to represent my country in Miss World, I was dreaming on it and call support to all beauty pageant stakeholders,” said Salha.
However the queen was not allowed to continue with the interview by the security guards and bouncers and gave difficulties the journalists to get other deep information concerning her.
The pageant also saw Miss Shinyanga, Tracy Sospeter winning the second position and was given Sh6.2 million while Alexia Williams also from Ilala emerged third and was given Sh4 million.
Ilala zone dominated the pageant after winning the fourth position through Jennifer Kakolaki and Lindi region top queen, Lovennes Flavian won fifth position.

Others contestants who qualified into to 15 and took home Sh1.2 million were Mwajabu Juma (Temeke, Miss Top Model), Rose Hurbert (North, Talent), Mariaclara Mathayo (Coast), Cynthia Kimasha (Temeke), Christine Williams (Iringa), Hamisa Hassan , Stella Mbuge (Kinondoni), Chiaru Masonobo (Udsm) and Irene Karugaba of Mwanza.

The contestants who were give consolation prizes of Sh700,000 were Weirungu David, Neema Mtitu, Zerulia Manoko , Christina Mwenegoha, Dalila Gharibu, Maua Kimambo, Blessing Ngowi, Glory Lory, Zubeda Seif , Husna Maulid , Atu Daniel, Leila Juma , Asha Saleh and Glory Samwel.
The pageant was entertained by Tanzania artistes but it was the now famous Sharobaro who took the stage by storm and John Maganga who imitated the late Michael Jackson.

Juliana Kanyomozi from Uganda did her part also by making the crowd leave their chairs with her Usiende Mbali and Haturudi Nyuma.

Salha’s victory brings the crown back to Ilala after years of missing the crown. Last year’s Genevieve Mpangala is from Temeke while before her Mwanza had taken the crown twice with Nasrin Karim and Miriam Gerald emerging winners in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
